Table Top Battle Games are wargames that are played over a table, or large flat surface. The armies are represented by models or counters, while results from actions usually are determined by rolling one or more dice. These games also need 3d or 2d scenery to make them more realistic, as tactics can be changed by a single building. These games can also be similar to model railroading, which give the fun and excitement of playing with and over a realistic landscape. In wargaming, the confrontations can be as simple as a "Hack and Slash" game, where the only objective is to wipe the enemy off the face of the table, or can be more complex such as, "I need to capture that building", or "I have to escape that edge with at least half as many troops I started out with." There are many different types of table top wargames, but I am going to tell you about the ones I know. Dungeons And Dragons: While this game does not have armies 100% of the time, it does still require strategy and some hard thinking. In this game, you start out with a character of choice, and go through a quest, led by a DM, or dungeon master. The only way it is a table top game, is that you can be represented by certain models, moved around some kind of flat surface. Warhammer: This is a fantasy wargame, and only a wargame. In this, it is all about models, moving miniatures, rolling dice, and really having to think about which move is next. Since this is fantasy, there are many mythical creatures, such as dragons, orcs, undead (zombies and the like) elves, ratmen, and practically any other thing considered to be mythical. but there is a place for normal men to be in this world too. Warhammer 40,000: Just like Warhammer, but set far into the future, in the 41st millenium (yes, the year 40,000, or around then). It is a dark universe, where man is ravaged by many different alien or even human races, all somehow intent on destroying man, and anyone else in their way. A large difference from Warhammer, is that the formations are loose, providing more mobility than in it's fantasy counterpart. There are many more games that will be listed, and if you know of any others, please contact me (you'll find my email address in the opinions area) and describe what the game is all about.
